A Former Standard 3 Ismaili Student of Aga Khan Primary School, Nairobi, Shares Memorable Photos of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 1966 Visit to School
INTRODUCED BY ABDULMALIK MERCHANT
Publisher-Editor of Simerg, Simergphotos and Ismailitica
Juby Sprake (maiden name Juby Alibhai) of Vancouver, British Columbia, was recently introduced to this photo blog. To our delight, within days of viewing rare and historical photos of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visits to the Aga Khan School in Nairobi, Kenya, in early to mid 1960’s (see links below), she retrieved from her personal album three memorable photos of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visit to her Aga Khan Primary School in 1966, when she was in Standard 3.
A smile came over Juby as she pointed herself out in the photo to me and her work colleague. Juby recollected the few names of her classmates and teachers she remembered, and we have included those names in the captions. However, we invite other students in the photos who have not been mentioned to submit their names, and we shall update the captions accordingly.
Also, just as Juby did for us, we invite our readers to visit their old family photo albums, and present to us rare historical photos such as the ones on this page and and other posts on this blog for publication. We thank Juby for these special photos from her album.

I vividly remember this visit in November 1966, by Mowlana Hazar Imam, to the Aga Khan Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya. I was in Std 5 and the class teacher was a Mr. Azim Damji. He now resides in Vancouver, Canada. I also have a photo of Hazar Imam greeting him with the pupils in the background.
Born in Nairobi, brought back memories of the primary school where I studied. These lovely photos of Mawlana Hazar Imam remind us how much he has done for us in all facets of life, including in the field of education. He has guided us and advised us on the importance of education for our jamat for our progress both intellectually, and through it understand Allah’s creation. He has guided us both spiritual and materially. Shukran lillah walhamdullillah.
Fantastic pictures very rare and valuable indeed. My heartfelt sincere and warm thanks to Juby Sprake for sharing these photos. May Hazar Imam’s showered and choicest blessings be with you always and we hope and pray that you continue with this benevolent and humanitarian deed of sharing these rare photos of Hazar Imam to our Murids from all parts of the world. May God bless you always. Warm Regards and Jazak Allah Kahir.
