In photos: “Life of Jehangir” – Ismaili missionary, teacher and writer who rendered long and dedicated services to the Jamat and the Imam-of-the-Time
“My many classmates and I from the class of ’67, Dar es Salaam, will always hold such fond memories of both Mr. and Mrs. Merchant in our hearts. We say goodbye to Mr. Merchant with heavy hearts, feeling a deep sense of loss of a wise and kind elder, while we feel so grateful and privileged to have been his young charges. Rest in peace, dear teacher and friend; you will be remembered lovingly by so many.” — Naseem E.J.

Alwaez Jehangir Merchant, loving husband of Alwaeza Maleksultan, dear father of Alnoor, Fahar and Abdulmalik, and a cherished and proud ‘dada’ (grandfather) of Naim and Nurin died on May 27, 2018 at the age of 89. To remember him, his family prepared a special poster under the title “The Life of Jehangir”.
The poster intrigued friends and visitors who came to visit Alwaez and Alwaeza. Maleksultan, with her photographic memory, provided rich accounts about their lives together, and especially the services they had rendered together to Jamats around the world.
Alwaez and Alwaeza were life-long partners for 66 years, and served Ismaili institutions side by side in both honorary and professional capacities from 1954 onwards. However, Alwaeza had long before started giving sermons in Jamatkhanas in Mumbai and Bandra from a very young age, when she was still in her early teen years.
This post expands on the pictures displayed in the poster, and includes a few of the hundreds of photos of family members and friends that Alwaez and Alwaeza preserved in their family albums. Many who are in the pictures may be viewing their own photos for the first time; this is not surprising because we often find our pictures that we never knew existed when we visit our friends and see their albums. We are also pleased to include historical photos of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visits to Africa and the U.K.
The entire family of late Alwaez Jehangir (1928-2018) has been deeply touched by the tributes and prayers that have poured in from around the world. A few select messages from the hundreds that were received are embedded within this post.
We thank everyone for their heartfelt prayers. They have given us immense strength and inspiration.
We express our shukrana to Mawlana Hazar Imam for blessing Jehangir with a life of service to the Jamat and the Imam-of-the-Time.
Note: In the photo captions, my parents are referred simply as Jehangir and Maleksultan. I would appreciate if individuals that I have not named in the photos (for fear of making a mistake), please forward me their names by email at simerg@aol.com or complete the feedback form at the bottom of this so that I may revise the captions; when replying please mention the numbered caption.

“Ina Lil Lahi Wa ina Ilahi Rajioon”. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen
A marvelous tribute.
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem. Alwaez Merchant was a tremendously important influence in my adolescent years, on my religious education and formation of character, and his physical passing is truly a great loss to all of us, who were his students and/or Alwaeza Maleksultan’s students. We were touched by his knowledge, values and personal radiance, and the immense body of learning material and legacies gifted to us from his intensive service (seva), his dini endeavours, and personal sacrifices throughout his life. His influence and love will guide our path through the rest of our lives. May our most sincere, heartfelt prayers reach him in companionship on High, and may all his wishes be fulfilled in all the worlds. Innalillahi wainna ilayhi rajioon.
May his soul rest in peace in NOORANI ABODE. Alwaez Jehangir’s long selfless devotion to the Imam & jamat in Africa, UK and North America was exceptional. We will miss him but he is always with us in our love/hearts & prayers. Our sincere condolences and prayers for his wife Alwaeza Maleksultan and his beloved family. We all know they will continue his legacy. Ameen.
A very moving and comprehensive pictorial coverage of this great mentor of the Jamat. The feedback that appeared immediately after his death as well as in this post from across the globe speak for themselves what the departed soul deserves. We all share your family’s bereavement and pray his soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen.
Ya Ali Madad!
I am very sad to read about the demise of a faithful Alwaiz of our community. “Ina Lil Lahi Wa Ina Ilaihi Rajioon”.
The Honorable Alwaiz rendered services to the Imam of the time and to the Jamat, his journey to the eternal will be guided by the light of the divine.
Although I am too late because of unawareness, please accept my prayers for the eternal peace of the soul of our late Alwaiz.
With Prayers,
Muhammad Jalaluddin

Our teacher will always be cherished in our hearts. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace. Ameen
Hello Malik:
Both your dad and mum were my teachers in Lourenço Marques (LM). Besides being family friends from LM days the pictures bring back wonderful memories of an Ismaili Legend. I can see that you are very proud of him as you should be.
The pictures were amazing. There are pictures of my nanima in LM and my uncle Haider Issa, My uncle’s father Issa Noormohamed is standing with your dad at the Pyramids, and the best part was that in the needlework piece two pieces were done by my mother.
Did you know that a Portugal Jamati member produced a book a couple of years ago, with all information on Ismailis living in LM?
Thanks again for bringing wonderful memories back.
Kind regards,
Moh Ebrahim
“Ina Lil Lahi Wa ina Ilahi Rajioon”. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen
Heartfelt condolences. May he rest in eternal peace Ameen. An inspiring life that illuminated lives of countless Ismailis around the world.
I noticed Alwaez Nizar Chunara in the pictures, whose waezes I had enjoyed in my youth; Abuali missionary whose sister in Karachi was my landlord during my stay for studies. Had good fortune to listen to Abualy missionary giving over 2 hours of waez in Nairobi. Also, Alwaez Sadru Pradhan who was also the manager at Air France in Nairobi if I recall correctly. His wife ran a successful safari travel agency. Great waezeens of our times. And Idris Rupani the principal of the Agakhan Academy in Nairobi. We lived just across the school.
Thanks for sharing these memories of Alwaez Jehangir Merchant.
This is a very memorable pictorial biography of my mentor and friend Alwaiz Jehangir. He is in many, many ways responsible for my involvement in Jamati services, someone I could turn to on all occasions. We shared many happy times at ITREB UK. I was privileged to assist him in production of one of the finest Jamati Journals called “ILM”. His quest for knowledge, his devotion to service to the Jamat and Imam of the time and his sense of humour are etched in my memories and he is never too far from deep prayers and affection. What an inspiring sevadari! May Mawla bless him with eternal peace and close to his Mubarak Light.
The services rendered by Al-waez Jehangir Merchant to the Ismaili community will always be remembered by the world Jamats. He will always be missed by us. May Mowla rest his soul in peace.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers.
Although I did not know your beloved father, reading about his life and that he was responsible for the Read & Know books, a lot of very pleasant childhood memoirs came flooding back. I remember late Al-Waez Abu Aly visiting my father, late Karmali Ahmed Shivji, in Nairobi. I loved sitting quietly by my fathers side, listening to Al-Waez Abualy talk about his various experiences. He used to bring me the Read & Know books. I still have a few copies from over 55 years ago and can’t wait to pull them out to re-read. Mawla rest Al-Waez Jehangir’s soul in eternal peace.
