Photographs taken at dawn: Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s outdoor exhibit at the Ismaili Centre Toronto

By SHAFIN VALLA
It was a privilege and honor to have had the opportunity of visiting The Living Sea — Fragile Beauty exhibition of photographs by Prince Hussain Aga Khan on two occasions during its display at the Ismaili Centre Toronto from May 24 – June 4, 2023.
The grandeur and majestic photography on display at dawn and into the sunrise was particularly breathtaking, as the morning sun stroked the sea animals and changed their appearance by the minute. With the morning birds singing, the vast space on the patio of the Ismaili Centre had a feeling of peacefulness and serenity.
While appreciating the beauty and wonders of creation, Prince Hussain’s stories and facts that were highlighted on several panels raised a deep awareness about the fragile beauty of the sea and its innocent creatures.

In speaking with friends and family there are some observations. Perhaps there are plans to host the exhibit in Edmonton, where the exhibition could be shared between the Aga Khan Garden in Edmonton and a prominent venue within the city. Whereas in Vancouver, we have the magnificent Ismaili Centre courtyard with its beautiful fountain as well as the social hall in the Jamatkhana.
Perhaps the exhibit will return to Toronto with more grandeur with the majestic images displayed in the external-courtyard entrance to the Aga Khan Museum, with the back-drop of the Aga Khan Park (and five granite pools) and the Ismaili Centre, flowing into the Museum and into its inner-courtyard.
A more public location for this prominent expose, press releases and promotion to the general public all add to the important message Prince Hussain is conveying to humanity in this important pictorial exhibit.

A BEAUTIFUL PUBLICATION — THE LIVING SEA BY HUSSAIN AGA KHAN

Unknown to me until informed by friends, Prince Hussain’s book The Living Sea was available for purchase at the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre literature counter. The beautiful 320 page hard cover book should have been on display and sale at the exhibit, encouraging visitors to physically carry the message home for reflection and discussion. Children and students would learn from the book, a great coffee table addition to any home.
Finally, the enthusiam and passion with which the volunteer guided the visitors through the exhibition was truly appreciated. Kudos to them as well as everyone else who served voluntarily and professionally to make this exhibition a huge success.
Please enjoy the pictures and a short video of my memorable early morning visit to Prince Hussain’s majestic exhibition.
