Photo of the Day: Ismaili Artist Showcases Her Artwork at the Residence of the US Ambassador to Tanzania for US Independence Day Celebrations, July 4

By MALIK MERCHANT AND SHAFINA JAFFER
Hundreds of millions of Americans in the USA and worldwide celebrated America’s 248th Independence Day on July 4, 2024, with fireworks, parades, parties and other special events.
In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Ismaili artist Shafina Jaffer — whom we featured earlier this year and whose artwork was projected on the facade of Windsor Castle during the Coronation Concert of His Majesty King Charles III — was invited to present a selection of her artwork, under the theme Harlem Renaissance and Art, at the residence of the US Ambassador to Tanzania, Michael Battle.
The guest of honour at the event was Tanzania’s foreign minister, January Yusuf Makamba. Safina exhibited her series on African Women titled Sacred Relationships, a powerful portrayal of the unity and solidarity of women.

While photographs were not permitted inside the residence, Safina gloriously celebrated the event by posing for a photograph in the US ambassador’s garden and participating in the mesmerizing fireworks display at the end of the evening. She has also submitted one of her powerful portrayals of African women for display in this post. We are pleased to present these photographs as our Photo of the Day feature, an occasional series in Simergphotos.
We invite you to visit our featured piece in Simerg highlighting Safina’s fantastic artwork.

Date posted: July 4, 2024.
CORRECTION: In our earlier version, we incorrectly stated in the title and photo captions that Shafina exhibited her artwork at the US embassy in Dar es Salaam. The event took place at the US Ambassador’s residence, not at the embassy.
