The Pioneer Community Center in Houston: A unique sports paradise and meeting place for members of the Ismaili community

On November 6, 2025, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, visited Houston for the inauguration of the Ismaili Centre. This significant event was followed by several mulaqats with the Jamat from Southern and Central USA, held over the subsequent days. The visit was a momentous occasion for the community, bringing together members from across the region in celebration and reflection.

During Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visit, the Pioneer Community Center emerged as one of the most prominent overflow locations for Jamatkhana gatherings, both in the days leading up to and during the visit itself. Its strategic location in Rosenberg, within the Greater Houston Area, made it an accessible and convenient venue for many members of the Jamat.

The Pioneer Community Center is a remarkable facility, dedicated exclusively to serving the Ismaili community. It offers a wide range of amenities designed to support wellness, recreation, and social connection. Among its features are:

• An indoor fitness centre,
• A spacious gymnasium with two NBA-sized basketball courts;
• Children’s playgrounds;
• A scenic lake;
• Pickleball and tennis courts;
• A beautiful swimming pool;
• A kilometre-long walking path;
• Cricket and football fields; and
• A dedicated seniors building

With its extensive range of activities and spaces, the Pioneer Community Center ensures that every member of the community — regardless of age or interest — can find something to enjoy and benefit from. The Centre stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to wellness, inclusivity, and togetherness.

For several thousand community members, Pioneer Community Center became the destination for evening prayers, followed by festivities and entertainment programs. The facility offers ample parking with space for 1,000 vehicles. Children and young members of the Jamat were especially excited to be there, making the most of its amenities, particularly the well-lit children’s playgrounds.

The Pioneer Community Center (PCC) is a project owned, managed and developed by Community Focus Foundation (CFF), an initiative of Pioneer Mutual Federal Credit Union. Community Focus Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2012 by Ismaili Muslim philanthropists in the United States. CFF’s vision is to serve the Ismaili community by providing inclusive, innovative, and sustainable projects.

I learned about this facility from Nazar Momin, my host during my visit to attend the inauguration of the stunning new Ismaili Center in Houston. I was graciously welcomed to the Center during the first of my three trips, when its members provided me with a comprehensive overview. After my brief introduction to the Center and being impressed by what I heard and saw, I took the initiative to revisit it later that evening. I followed that with an extended tour of the entire 44-acre site on a wonderful autumn-like morning. I realized why it has become a haven for sports and community events among all groups of the Jamat.

As I introduce the worldwide Jamat to this unique project, which is about 8 years old, I recall Mawlana Hazar Imam’s recent Farman to the Kenya Jamat on the importance of staying active through sports and movement. While the Pioneer Community Center is not a Jamati institutional initiative, it is being put to excellent use by the Jamat, as Mawlana Hazar Imam desires for all his institutional projects. The Community Center was created with the Jamat foremost in mind, leveraging the economic power of the Houston Jamat’s private-sector entrepreneurs and professionals. The exciting project serves as a role model for the Ismaili community worldwide. The Community Focus Foundation was thoughtful and visionary in creating the Pioneer Community Center. Its aim was to advance community togetherness through one of the most uniting and thrilling human interests — that of sports, in both a leisurely and competitive spirit — and it has succeeded in doing so.
