Photo of the Day: Calgary – Blue Sky City, Really? Or a Beautiful Rainbow City?
Sunshine, innovation, and diversity are among the reasons why Calgary was branded as a “Blue Sky City” on April 16, 2025, replacing the previous slogan, “Be Part of the Energy.”
When it comes to Sunshine, it is interesting to note that the huge skylight built in the BMO centre during its expansion was designed specifically to showcase Calgary’s beautiful blue skies! However, the timing of the rebranding, from the perspective of how the last 90 days have passed, is quite ironic. The number of blue-sky days this past spring and summer hardly justifies Calgary as the sunniest city in Canada, as the rebranding suggests. According to WorldAtlas.com, there are 333 sunny days and 2,396 hours of sunshine per year.

For several days, Calgary has been under a barrage of weather alerts. This evening was no different. As I sat at a McDonald’s, sipping my coffee, I looked west towards the Kananaskis. The skies were sunny, but the clouds directly above were still a menacing grey after a severe downpour. Driving back home, my eyes caught the sight of several beautiful rainbows, and I drove to a semi-dead-end road with the best possible view of the rainbows. You can’t predict when the brilliance of the rainbow is gone, and I stepped out onto a road that was filled with water. The adjacent bushes were muddy, but I walked through them to capture these photographs. Thankfully, my mobile was charged!

For the moment, I brand Calgary as the Rainbow City. Honestly, I haven’t seen so many rainbows anywhere in the world as I have seen in Calgary over the past several days. I should always be carrying my zoom lens camera. There are surprises and beautiful opportunities everywhere.
I genuinely want to enjoy the rest of the summer, and I hope that, for the sake of everyone here and visiting this beautiful city and its Provincial and National Parks, sunny skies will prevail and that Calgary will truly live up to its rebranding as Blue Sky City.
